Physician Bios
Dr. P. Michael Leahy is the founder of Champion Health Associates and the respected inventor of Active Release Techniques®. He is an honor graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and served as a fighter and test-pilot. Dr. Leahy graduated summa-cum laude and valedictorian of Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1984 and became a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) in 1986. For the past 15 years, Dr. Leahy has been proudly serving Colorado Springs area patients and their families. He has been a competitor in over 25 Ironman triathlons and enjoys a multitude of interests.
In 1985, Dr. Leahy began developing Active Release Techniques® in order to meet the needs of his patients more effectively. ART is so successful that he now teaches the technique to physicians of many disciplines, throughout the world. He has assisted aspiring, professional, and world-class athletes in a wide range of modes, including professional golfers, hockey, football, and Olympic sports. In addition to serving athletes, Dr. Leahy discovered and published the Law of Repetitive Motion and the Cumulative Injury Cycle, which has helped redefine prevention and treatment of work-related injuries. He created Champion Health to serve people in need by working with their supporting medical team to achieve normal function and improved health.
Dr. Gary R. Wood is the "soul" of Champion Health. Dr. Wood is a graduate of Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and has been practicing chiropractic for over 20 years. He is a family man with a passion for the outdoors and community.
Since joining Champion Health, in 1997, Dr. Wood pursues many different outlets for his talents. As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) as well as an instructor and practitioner of Active Release Techniques®, he provides sports medicine and chiropractic for Pikes Peak International Raceway as well as injury and performance care at PRCA Rodeos.
Dr. Wood works with people suffering from sports-related injuries as well as those recovering from work-related accidents and automobile crashes. In fact, Dr. Wood is certified as a Low Speed Rear End Crash Re-constructionist and is an active participant in automobile crash analysis and research to help advocate for individuals injured in such incidents. A favorite of patients and staff, alike, Dr. Wood's philosophy on chiropractic is: "Life is function, improve function and improve life."
Dr. Jeff Mathews has been in chiropractic practice for more than 20 years. As valedictorian and summa cum laude graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic, he also earned the Health Center Achievement Award for Exemplary Clinical Performance and Excellence. Since 1989, Dr. Mathews has been in private practice in St. Peters, Missouri, and in 2005, he joined us at Champion Health.
Dr. Mathews is a competitive triathlete and distance runner and was selected as a participant for the 1996 USA National Team for the Long Course World Championships. He has coached high school track for 10 years and is currently the distance coach for Colorado Springs Christian Schools middle school. He is married and has three children who have all run at the national level.
Dr. Mathews is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) as well as an instructor and provider of Active Release Techniques®. In addition, he is an instructor at Logan College for ART® and a Post-Graduate lecturer in upper and lower extremities. As such, Dr. Mathews has worked with a great many families as a physician as well as a many competitive biking, running, multi-sport athletes, and professional players from the NFL and NHL.
